Choosing the Perfect Wall Art

The Step-by-Step Guide for Choosing the Perfect Wall Art

The right wall art can liven up any space. Whether it’s a living room, a bedroom, or even a bathroom, beautiful wall artwork can set the mood right. When it comes to wall art, you won’t face any problem with choice. There are plenty of great choices out there. The problem is choosing the right one.

While a wall art piece might look good by itself, it might not be the best choice for where you want to put it. And that’s why we’ve created this guide. Instead of trying to get lucky with your choices, here is a step-by-step method for choosing the perfect wall art every time.

Step 1: Choose the right size

Size is the first thing you should consider when choosing a piece of wall art for any room. You don’t want something too big or too small for where you want to place it. The size needs to be just right.

When you’re choosing the size for your wall art, there are two things you need to consider: the size of the space and the surrounding furniture.

In most cases, you’ll be putting your new piece on a blank wall or near a piece of furniture —most likely a sofa.

Case 1: On an empty wall

If you’re placing your wall art on a blank wall, a useful rule of thumb is to choose a piece that takes up 60-75% of the wall’s area. Since reaching this ratio for a large wall won’t be easy with single wall art pieces —except for exceptionally large one, you can always go for a gallery wall.

Instead of using a single wall art piece, you can use multiple ones of different sizes. The tricky part would be arranging those pieces. And for that, you can check out this BuzzFeed blog post

Case 2: Above furniture

The relation between wall art and furniture size is super-simple. Just try to keep the width of the wall art to around ⅔ of the furniture piece below. For most sofas, a 60x90cm or 90x120cm wall art piece will look perfect.

A good tip to see if your selected size would fit in well would be to use either colourful tape or baking paper and lay it on the wall. This would give a better sense of the size and how well it works with the space around it.

Now that you know the size of the art pieces you want to get, it’s time to choose the theme.

Step 2: Choose a matching theme

Unless you’re redesigning your entire home or office from scratch, your new piece of wall art should match an existing design. And that’s why you need to choose a theme that’ll work with what you already have.

Do you have a modern interior? Lots of wooden surfaces? Natural stone? A Scandinavian style? Whatever the style of your interior is, your wall art needs to have a similar vibe. Otherwise, it’ll look odd.

Of course, the flexibility for use with different interior styles varies from one wall art theme to the other. Themes like landscape and beach wall art —and photographs in general— tend to work well with pretty much all interior styles.

If you’re a fan of the great Australian outdoors, some Bondi Beach wall art or Australian beach wall art, in general, can bring some of that vibe to your room.

Step 3: Choose the right colors

There are different methods for choosing wall art colors, with the first and most common method being choosing colors that match the room. So, if you have a room with lots of greens, wall art with different shades of green would be a great choice. That’s what most people do.

A bolder approach would be going for contrasting colors. Instead of choosing wall art that blends in with the room, you get something that stands out. And of course, this contrast can be achieved in different ways.

If you have a colourful interior, you might want to go for black-and-white wall art. If you have a modern interior with white or grey walls, something with popping colours will add some life to the room.

Of course, choosing contrasting colours that complement your walls isn’t always that simple. And that’s where the colour wheel can help. All you have to do is go to this free tool by Canva, choose the colour of your wall, and complimentary from the drop- down menu. Once you do that, you’ll get the perfect colour for your new wall art that’ll compliment your wall.

Finally, choose something you love

Now that you know everything about your new wall art from the size to the theme and colour, it’s time to choose something you love that fits this criteria. If you’re hanging something on your wall, it better be something you like seeing every day.

If you love nature, Australian wall art that features coastal art or city landscape might be your best option. For history buffs, the medieval castles of Slovakia have the colours and background stories that make them perfect for decorating your wall.

Whatever your personal preferences are and your space is like, there is a piece of wall art out there that’ll make it look better.
